Where you at?
Foursquare is not a new platform, but it continues to dominate the location-based social networking landscape with its ongoing commitment to improving its service and integrating with other platforms.
We’ve covered Foursquare in the past. Amy Schmittauer shared some great insights into how brands can take advantage of the platform—even without having a physical location into which users can check in—in a recent Magnet Minute video.
Last week, Foursquare released an update to the mobile platform that spruced up the interface and added several new features that take it a step beyond a mere tool for telling the world, “I’m here!” Users can now like or dislike locations, and those social recommendations now publish to their friends’ news feeds, turning the platform into much more of a recommendation engine than before. Maps have been integrated further into the experience, showing recommended locations in the Explore tab based on friends’ check-ins, user tips, and specials. Foursquare is also now more deeply integrated into Facebook, publishing users’ activity and Likes prominently in their Timelines.
So all of the above is fine and good. But how does a brand make use of the network to engage users and market their offerings?
